How to choose the best boiler

Picking Out the correct central heating boiler can be a complex task. You might begin with the price but also want to think of other considerations, the amount of hot water required at any moment is also important, how much space you have in your house and loft together with how much gas central heating boiler will use over its life-time.

The main forms of central heating boiler are:-

Chimney back boilers

It is not remarkable to find back boilers in aging housing stock, these domestic back boilers were frequently installed in the chimney space out of sight, the fire concealing the back boiler behind it. Low internal water pressure is a problem in these boilers and they are now only installed as replacements, they take up space to install and you will need to find a place to hide this type of boiler. However if you already have a back boiler then a straightforward substitute could be your best alternative.

Most times, gas back boilers are not very economic, but of late large advances in efficiency have been made, so by putting in a new back boiler, you could make savings in your energy usage and cut your heating bills.

Combination boilers

In recent years the most popular type of gas boiler sold is the combi gas fired boiler. Combi heating boilers use gas sparingly and are smaller than other gas fired boiler types allowing them to be squeezed into small cupboards. As they heat water direct from the mains, you do not have to wait for water to heat up - as a result you have unlimited hot water.

Combi gas fired boilers are more economical than the other gas boiler types. There is no hot water storage tank reducing heat losses in the central heating system. One disadvantage to look for is that you hot bath could run cold if somebody turns on the hot water taps in the kitchen simultaneously.

Unvented central heating system central heating boilers

A hot water cylinder is used by a system gas boiler to store of water. This will require space in your home. The installation tends to be better and lower-priced with this type of gas boiler as the other central heating system constituents are built in.

Running several streams of hot water from different taps simultaneously is now manageable. You will also get great internal water pressure.

Open vent central heating gas fired boilers

Most families will have a vented gas boiler installed. They come with 2 water storage tanks to be fitted in the loft., and a hot water storage cylinder in the airing cupboard so it uses a lot of space.

One of the loft storage tanks feeds the hot water storage cylinder with water from the mains.

The other tank in the loft enables expansion of the water in the central heating when it heats up. Although the hot water cylinder will take a while to heat up it it can supply several hot water taps simultaneously.
